Categories by BTP vs Magical XML/HTML Sitemapfor Shopify (2026)
Categories by BTP and Magical XML/HTML Sitemap both aim to improve Shopify store navigation and SEO, but they approach the problem from fundamentally different angles. Categories by BTP focuses on creating structured category navigation, offering a potentially more intuitive user experience for product discovery through nested categories and breadcrumbs. Its target audience appears to be merchants with large or complex product catalogs that benefit from clear hierarchical organization. However, its low rating and limited number of reviews raise concerns about its reliability and effectiveness. Its value proposition centers around automated category tree generation and SEO optimization via collection title updates. Magical XML/HTML Sitemap, on the other hand, prioritizes improving website crawlability and discoverability for both users and search engines. It focuses on generating and customizing HTML sitemaps and linking XML sitemaps for Google SEO. It appeals to merchants focused on technical SEO and ensuring that all their pages are easily accessible to search engine crawlers. Its higher rating and more reviews suggest a more stable and well-received solution. The app's value proposition revolves around easy sitemap generation, customization, and direct integration with Google for SEO benefits.

Our Verdict
Given the available data in 2026, Magical XML/HTML Sitemap appears to be the safer choice for most Shopify merchants due to its significantly higher rating and larger number of reviews. It addresses a fundamental SEO need – sitemap generation – in a way that is reportedly easy to use and customize. It caters to a broader audience concerned with overall site accessibility for search engines.
Categories by BTP might be considered by merchants with very specific needs for deeply nested category structures and a willingness to experiment with a less established app. However, the low rating and small number of reviews suggest potential issues with reliability or functionality that should be carefully considered before investing time and effort into implementation. It's a higher risk, potentially higher reward option if the structured category navigation is paramount.
Common Questions
Which app is better for improving Google rankings?
Magical XML/HTML Sitemap directly addresses Google SEO by allowing you to link your XML sitemap. Categories by BTP claims SEO improvements via collection title optimization, but this impact is likely less direct and may require more effort to realize.
Which app is easier to set up?
Magical XML/HTML Sitemap appears easier to set up, as it offers a simple sitemap builder. Categories by BTP requires integrating a code snippet into your theme, which may require some technical knowledge.
If I only need to create a well-organized product catalog, which app is better?
Categories by BTP is specifically designed for creating in-depth, nested category structures. Magical XML/HTML Sitemap focuses on overall site navigation and doesn't offer features for organizing products into categories.
Which app is better for very large online stores with thousands of products?
Both apps could be beneficial for large stores. Categories by BTP helps customers find products via category navigation. Magical XML/HTML Sitemap helps search engines index all products.
