Categories Uncomplicated vs Search Veilfor Shopify (2026)
Categories Uncomplicated and Search Veil are both Shopify apps categorized under "Search and navigation", but they serve vastly different purposes. Categories Uncomplicated focuses on *improving* the search and navigation experience by organizing collections into a hierarchical category structure, enabling customers to easily find products through categories, breadcrumbs, and sub-category icons. It aims to enhance discoverability and SEO. Search Veil, on the other hand, aims to *restrict* search results, allowing merchants to hide specific products from appearing in the store's search functionality, impacting internal and potentially external (Google) visibility.

Our Verdict
Categories Uncomplicated is suitable for merchants who want to improve their store's organization, navigation, and SEO. Its strength lies in helping customers find products more easily through clear categories and sub-categories. It will be especially useful for stores with large inventories. Search Veil is designed for merchants who need specific control over product visibility. This might be crucial for managing promotional items, fees, or out-of-stock items, and ensuring customers only see relevant products in their search results. In short, if you want to *improve* search, choose Categories Uncomplicated. If you want to *control* search, choose Search Veil. The apps address different challenges, and may even complement each other.
Common Questions
Which app is better for improving SEO?
Categories Uncomplicated directly addresses SEO by enhancing metadata sent to Google with dynamic JSON-LD, which can improve search engine rankings by helping Google understand your site's structure. Search Veil hides products from indexing, negatively impacting their individual SEO performance.
Can I use both apps together?
Yes, it's technically possible to use both. Categories Uncomplicated organizes and improves discoverability, while Search Veil hides specific products. For instance, you could use Categories Uncomplicated to structure your main product lines while using Search Veil to hide discontinued items or special offer add-ons.
Which app requires more technical expertise?
Categories Uncomplicated might require slightly more technical understanding, particularly for merchants using older Shopify 1.0 themes, which require code integration. Search Veil appears simpler, based on the description, suggesting a more user-friendly interface for selecting products to hide.
Does Search Veil completely remove products from my store?
No, Search Veil does not remove products entirely. It hides them from the online store's *search results*. The products can still exist and may be accessible via direct URLs or other means if not configured otherwise.
Is Categories Uncomplicated just for visual organization, or does it affect the backend?
Categories Uncomplicated primarily improves the visual front-end organization for customers, but by improving the organization, it impacts the backend organization also, which can save time and increase staff efficiency
