Checkout Bear vs Essential Free Shipping Upsellfor Shopify (2026)
Checkout Bear and Essential Free Shipping Upsell are both Shopify apps aiming to increase sales, but they approach this goal with different strategies and target distinct merchant profiles. Checkout Bear focuses on comprehensive checkout page customization and optimization, offering a suite of features to directly modify the checkout experience, increase AOV via upsells, and instill customer confidence through trust badges and urgency tactics. It appears to be tailored towards Shopify Plus merchants, suggested by the 'checkout editor for Plus stores' claim, indicating a higher level of customization capability not available on standard Shopify plans. Essential Free Shipping Upsell, on the other hand, centers around incentivizing customers to spend more to qualify for free shipping. Its primary tool is a customizable free shipping progress bar. It also incorporates cart upsells and cross-sells, but its core value proposition is leveraging the psychological impact of free shipping as a purchase motivator. The larger number of reviews suggests a broader appeal and potentially easier implementation than Checkout Bear. While both aim to improve revenue, one manipulates the checkout experience, the other influences pre-checkout purchasing decisions.

Our Verdict
For Shopify Plus merchants seeking extensive control over their checkout experience and advanced customization options to optimize AOV and conversions, Checkout Bear is likely the better choice, despite having fewer reviews. The availability of a checkout editor specifically designed for Plus stores indicates a higher level of customization not readily available otherwise.
However, for most Shopify merchants who want a simpler, more straightforward solution to increase AOV by motivating customers to spend more, Essential Free Shipping Upsell offers a more accessible and proven strategy. The app's higher rating and significantly larger number of reviews suggest a broader appeal and potentially easier setup, making it a more practical choice for businesses of all sizes.
