Clerk Chat vs Dataships Checkout Opt‑infor Shopify (2026)
Clerk Chat and Dataships Checkout Opt-in, while both falling under the SMS marketing category on Shopify, serve distinctly different purposes and target different stages of the customer journey. Clerk Chat positions itself as a direct communication tool for two-way SMS and WhatsApp interactions, focused on customer support, order updates, and marketing promotions. Its strength lies in facilitating personalized and real-time engagement. Dataships Checkout Opt-in, on the other hand, concentrates on acquisition. It aims to increase email and SMS marketing opt-ins at the checkout stage, focusing on compliance and regional privacy requirements to maximize conversion rates. It also integrates with Klaviyo. The key difference is that Clerk Chat focuses on *ongoing* customer communication *after* acquisition, while Dataships focuses on *acquiring* customers in the first place. Clerk Chat aims to enable personalized conversations and marketing via SMS & WhatsApp, whereas Dataships' main objective is to grow your email and SMS marketing lists through optimized and compliant checkout experiences. One helps retain and engage customers, the other helps you acquire them. Therefore, they would likely be used in conjunction rather than as competing products.

Our Verdict
Dataships Checkout Opt-in appears to be a more established and reliable choice given its perfect rating and substantial number of reviews. It is best suited for merchants who prioritize acquiring new email and SMS subscribers through a compliant and optimized checkout process. Clerk Chat, with its unproven status and lack of reviews, poses a higher risk. However, if a merchant already has a solid marketing list and is looking to improve direct customer communication via SMS and WhatsApp, Clerk Chat *could* be a worthwhile experiment. The lack of initial traction would suggest proceeding with caution. Essentially, use Dataships to grow your list, and *potentially* Clerk Chat to engage with it.
