Dataships Checkout Opt‑in vs WhatsApp & SMS Notificationfor Shopify (2026)
Dataships Checkout Opt‑in and WhatsApp & SMS Notification both operate within the SMS marketing category on Shopify, but cater to vastly different merchant needs. Dataships Checkout Opt‑in focuses on growing email and SMS lists compliantly through checkout optimization, targeting merchants concerned with data privacy regulations and list growth for retention efforts. Its strength lies in dynamic consent management and Klaviyo integration, suggesting a focus on larger stores or those with established email marketing strategies. WhatsApp & SMS Notification, conversely, prioritizes direct, personalized communication with customers via SMS and WhatsApp, originating from the merchant's own phone number or preferred SMS provider. It aims to keep customers informed about order updates and facilitate two-way communication. This app seems better suited for smaller businesses wanting a hands-on approach to customer interaction. A significant difference is the emphasis on compliance and automated list building in Dataships versus the manual and direct communication focus of WhatsApp & SMS Notification. User feedback reflected in ratings and review count also paint a different picture of user satisfaction.

Our Verdict
For merchants prioritizing compliant list growth, automated consent management, and integration with platforms like Klaviyo, Dataships Checkout Opt‑in is the clear choice. Its higher rating and significantly larger review count also suggest greater user satisfaction. This app is a strong fit for businesses seeking a robust and automated solution to expand their marketing reach while adhering to privacy regulations.
However, for smaller businesses that value direct, personalized communication with customers via SMS and WhatsApp, and are comfortable managing communications directly from their own phone or SMS provider, WhatsApp & SMS Notification could be an option. The lower rating and fewer reviews suggest potential issues to consider, but the ability to send messages from your own number might be appealing for some. Ultimately, choice depends on the desired scale of automation, compliance requirements, and preferred level of direct customer interaction.
Common Questions
Which app is better for GDPR compliance?
Dataships Checkout Opt‑in is specifically designed with dynamic consent forms and compliance tracking, making it the better choice for GDPR and other privacy regulations.
Can I use both apps together?
While technically possible, it's likely redundant and could lead to customer confusion. Their core functionalities are different enough that choosing one aligns more with specific communication and compliance strategies.
Which app is easier to set up?
WhatsApp & SMS Notification might be slightly easier to set up initially, as it focuses on direct connection to a phone. However, Dataships offers dedicated support for guidance on privacy and growth strategy.
Does either app offer a free plan?
The data provided doesn't specify whether either app offers a free plan. Checking the Shopify App Store listings for the most up-to-date pricing and plan details is essential.
Which app is better for promotional campaigns?
WhatsApp & SMS Notification explicitly mentions sending promotional campaigns via SMS or WhatsApp. While Dataships aims to grow your list, the focus is on initial opt-in rather than ongoing promotional blasts, although list segmentation in Klaviyo would allow for such campaigns. Therefore WhatsApp & SMS is better for promotional campaigns as its features clearly state that.
