Essential Free Shipping Upsell vs EZ Checkout Controller | Rulesfor Shopify (2026)
Essential Free Shipping Upsell and EZ Checkout Controller | Rules, while both operating within the Shopify 'Checkout' category, address fundamentally different merchant needs. Essential Free Shipping Upsell focuses on increasing Average Order Value (AOV) and sales through incentivized free shipping promotions and cart upsells. Its core value proposition revolves around encouraging customers to spend more by strategically placing a progress bar that visually demonstrates how close they are to qualifying for free shipping or other rewards. EZ Checkout Controller | Rules, on the other hand, prioritizes control and security within the checkout process. It allows merchants to customize checkout rules related to order limits, payment and shipping methods, fraud prevention, and compliance requirements like Terms and Conditions. The primary distinction lies in their respective goals: Essential Free Shipping Upsell aims to boost revenue, while EZ Checkout Controller | Rules focuses on optimizing and securing the checkout experience. Essential Free Shipping Upsell is geared towards enhancing the customer journey and driving sales through promotional incentives. Conversely, EZ Checkout Controller | Rules caters to merchants who need granular control over their checkout process, addressing issues such as fraudulent orders, specific shipping restrictions, or compliance regulations. The difference in the number of reviews (438 vs. 7) may suggest differing adoption rates, although both apps boast perfect 5/5 ratings. Our Verdict
For merchants primarily concerned with boosting sales and average order value, Essential Free Shipping Upsell is the more suitable choice. Its focus on incentivized free shipping and cart upsells provides a direct pathway to revenue growth. The ease of use and visual appeal of the progress bar make it accessible for a wide range of businesses. However, if a merchant needs precise control over their checkout process, particularly for security, fraud prevention, regulatory compliance, or operational requirements (e.g., limiting orders based on product availability or blocking specific countries), then EZ Checkout Controller | Rules is the better option. The ability to set specific checkout rules and restrictions offers unparalleled customization, albeit potentially at the cost of increased complexity.
