Essential Free Shipping Upsell vs RuffRuff Selling Periodsfor Shopify (2026)
Essential Free Shipping Upsell and RuffRuff Selling Periods are both 5-star rated Shopify apps, but they cater to vastly different merchant needs. Essential Free Shipping Upsell focuses on boosting Average Order Value (AOV) through strategic use of a free shipping progress bar, cart upsells, and cross-sells. It aims to incentivize customers to spend more to reach a predefined cart goal, rewarding them with free shipping or other perks. Its core strength lies in revenue generation and customization, allowing merchants to control the look and feel of the progress bar and upsell offers. RuffRuff Selling Periods, in contrast, focuses on managing product availability and pre-sale announcements by controlling the 'Add to Cart' button visibility based on defined selling periods. Its standout feature is its ability to prevent purchases outside the designated sales period, an area where other apps struggle. This app appears particularly useful for merchants launching new products or running limited-time sales, especially those operating in regions where precise sales management is critical (as indicated by its origin in Japan and language support).

Our Verdict
If your primary goal is to increase your average order value and incentivize customers to spend more, Essential Free Shipping Upsell is the clear choice. Its focus on free shipping progress bars and integrated upsells is designed to drive revenue. However, if you need precise control over product availability, running pre-sale announcements, or managing limited-time sales, RuffRuff Selling Periods is the better option. Its ability to prevent out-of-period purchases offers a crucial layer of control.
While both apps fall under the 'Checkout' category, their applications are distinct. Essential Free Shipping Upsell enhances the checkout experience with incentives, while RuffRuff Selling Periods uses checkout validation to enforce sales periods. The extremely low review count for RuffRuff Selling Periods is a factor to consider, but the unique functionality suggests it fills a specific need not met by other apps. The app might be very new and not have time to build a large volume of reviews.
