Essential Free Shipping Upsell vs SMART Checkout Rulesfor Shopify (2026)
Essential Free Shipping Upsell and SMART Checkout Rules are distinct Shopify apps that address different aspects of checkout optimization. Essential Free Shipping Upsell focuses on increasing average order value (AOV) by motivating customers to spend more to qualify for free shipping. It uses a progress bar and cart upsells/cross-sells. SMART Checkout Rules, on the other hand, provides granular control over the checkout process itself, enabling merchants to customize payment, shipping, and discount options based on specific conditions. The key difference lies in their primary goal. Essential Free Shipping Upsell aims to increase revenue through incentivized spending, whereas SMART Checkout Rules focuses on creating a cleaner and more dynamic checkout experience tailored to specific customer segments or order types. While both apps touch the checkout flow, Essential Free Shipping Upsell's impact is pre-checkout, influencing cart value, while SMART Checkout Rules directly manipulates the checkout page elements and options presented to the user.

Our Verdict
For merchants primarily concerned with increasing average order value and incentivizing customers to spend more, Essential Free Shipping Upsell is the clear choice. Its progress bar and integrated upsell features are designed to directly boost revenue. However, if a merchant requires advanced control over the checkout process itself, such as customizing payment options for different customer segments or managing high-risk orders, SMART Checkout Rules offers a more robust solution.
Consider SMART Checkout Rules if you need B2B checkout flows, want to hide specific payment gateways based on location, or want to streamline options. If you want to simply encourage more sales through free shipping with a visual motivator, choose Essential Free Shipping Upsell. It's also important to consider the volume of reviews when weighing the ratings - Essential Free Shipping Upsell has significantly more reviews indicating wider usage and potentially more robust testing in the market.
