Our Verdict
Merchants needing to generate SKUs for internal organization and don't require GS1 compliance should choose F: SKU Code Generator. It's designed for quick, customizable SKU generation. However, if you are selling on platforms requiring GS1 barcodes (GTIN, UPC, EAN) like Amazon or Walmart, or are required to use them by a retailer, GS1 Assistant is the appropriate choice. GS1 Assistant handles the complexities of GS1 barcode management, ensuring compliance and preventing listing errors. It is important to determine whether your store will use GS1 identification or not.
Common Questions
Do I need both apps?
It depends. If you only need to organize your internal inventory, F: SKU Code Generator is sufficient. If you need to comply with GS1 barcode standards for external sales channels, GS1 Assistant is necessary.
Can F: SKU Code Generator generate UPC or EAN codes?
Based on the description, F: SKU Code Generator generates internal SKUs, not GS1 compliant UPC, EAN, or GTIN codes. It is focused on creating SKU templates.
What happens if I already have a GS1 Company Prefix?
GS1 Assistant is designed to work with your existing GS1 Company Prefix, allowing you to assign, track, and manage your barcodes from within Shopify.
Does GS1 Assistant guarantee my products will be approved by Amazon?
GS1 Assistant helps ensure that your products meet the barcode requirements of platforms like Amazon, which increases the likelihood of approval. However, other factors can influence approval. The description states: 'See how Amazon, Walmart, and Google view your products in GS1'. This implies that the app offers insights but does not guarantee approval.
Is it hard to use GS1 Assistant?
The description emphasizes managing GS1 barcodes 'from Shopify instead of multiple GS1 portals', implying a simpler, more centralized workflow. Direct integration for supported GS1 members likely streamlines the process further.
