Insertr: Marketing Automation vs Ribbon | Giftingfor Shopify (2026)
Insertr: Marketing Automation and Ribbon | Gifting are both Shopify apps with perfect 5/5 ratings, but they cater to distinctly different aspects of marketing and customer engagement. Insertr focuses on optimizing physical marketing inserts within existing order fulfillment processes, offering features like automatic insert application based on customizable rules, seamless integration with 3PLs, and ROI tracking for insert campaigns. It's designed for merchants looking to leverage physical inserts strategically to drive subscriptions, cross-sells, and overall order value by adding targeted promotions, samples, or personalized notes directly into shipments. Ribbon, on the other hand, provides a gifting solution enabling customers to send products as gifts without needing recipient sizes or addresses, facilitating new customer acquisition and driving sales through a seamless gifting experience. Ribbon centers on product gifting capabilities, allowing merchants to offer a flexible alternative to gift cards and introduce their products to new customers. It offers features such as upsells during the gift redemption process, customizable product selection for gifting, and analytics to identify top-gifted items and seasonal trends. While both apps aim to enhance sales and customer retention, Insertr prioritizes optimizing post-purchase physical marketing while Ribbon centers around enabling and optimizing pre-purchase gifting.

Our Verdict
If a merchant already utilizes physical marketing inserts and seeks to optimize their performance, track ROI, and seamlessly integrate with existing fulfillment processes, Insertr: Marketing Automation is the superior choice. Its strength lies in its detailed tracking and automation of physical inserts within the fulfillment workflow. On the other hand, if the merchant's goal is to expand their customer base through product gifting and offer a flexible alternative to gift cards without needing recipient addresses, Ribbon | Gifting is the better fit. It provides a seamless gifting experience that can drive new customer acquisition and increase AOV, making it ideal for brands focusing on gift-giving strategies.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up for merchants who don't have a tech team?
While both apps aim for ease of use, Ribbon | Gifting likely requires less technical expertise for initial setup, as it focuses on gifting workflows which are generally more straightforward than integrating with an existing 3PL or WMS, which Insertr does.
Which app provides better ROI tracking?
Insertr: Marketing Automation explicitly focuses on tracking the ROI of physical inserts, providing metrics like subscription upsells and cross-sell conversions. Ribbon | Gifting offers analytics on top-gifted items and seasonal trends, but not direct ROI for gifting campaigns.
Which app is better for holiday promotions?
Ribbon | Gifting is designed for gifting campaigns and likely offers greater flexibility and impact for holiday promotions where gifting is prevalent. While Insertr can also be used for holiday promotions, its focus is more on targeted inserts for specific order types during that period, rather than gifting specifically.
Do both apps integrate with Shopify POS?
The provided descriptions do not explicitly state if either app integrates with Shopify POS. Further research on each app's official documentation would be required to confirm POS integration capabilities.
Which app has the better potential for increasing AOV (Average Order Value)?
Both apps offer features to increase AOV. Insertr does it by including special offers or discount inserts. Ribbon does it by suggesting upsells during the gift redemption flow, and by allowing buyers to purchase additional items along with the gift.
