Klarna vs Partial Pay & Deposit: Downpayfor Shopify (2026)
Klarna and Partial Pay & Deposit: Downpay are both payment solutions for Shopify, but they cater to distinct needs. Klarna aims to boost overall conversion rates by offering flexible payment options like 'pay later' and financing to a broad customer base, emphasizing its global reach of over 100 million customers. Downpay, conversely, focuses on pre-order sales and high-value products by providing a white-label layaway solution with deposit and split payment options. Downpay emphasizes control and customization for the merchant, offering features like auto-charging cards and integration with Shopify Flow, appealing specifically to businesses dealing with custom or made-to-order goods. While Klarna presents itself as a seamless, easy-to-integrate solution for increasing sales, Downpay positions itself as a more technical and customizable option specifically for pre-orders and high-value items. Klarna relies on its brand recognition and large user base, targeting merchants looking for broad conversion improvements. Downpay provides more direct control over payment collection and customer management, which is valuable for merchants willing to invest time into customization and workflow optimization. Considering their vastly different ratings and review counts, Downpay seems to be providing a better customer experience overall, especially given the negative sentiment reflected in Klarna's reviews.

Our Verdict
Based on the available data, Partial Pay & Deposit: Downpay appears to be the stronger choice for merchants selling custom, made-to-order, or high-value products, especially those using pre-order models. Its high rating, significant number of reviews, and feature set designed for managing deposits and split payments indicate a well-received and effective solution. Merchants comfortable with some level of technical configuration and seeking greater control over payment collection will likely find Downpay a better fit.
Klarna, despite its promise of seamless integration and a large user base, suffers from a significantly lower rating and minimal reviews. While it might appeal to merchants seeking to offer broad 'pay later' options without deep technical integration, the negative feedback suggests potential drawbacks in user experience or functionality. Unless the negative feedback is resolved, Downpay is the more recommended option based on the available data, particularly for its target niche.
