Klevu ‑ AI Search & Discovery vs Motive ‑ Privacy‑Minded Searchfor Shopify (2026)
Klevu and Motive both aim to enhance on-site search and product discovery for Shopify merchants using AI, but they differ in their approach and target audience. Klevu emphasizes advanced AI search and merchandising with features designed for busy merchandising teams seeking to increase on-site search revenue and AOV. Their platform boasts comprehensive tools for campaign management, advanced filtering, and compatibility with Shopify Markets and Hydrogen, suggesting a focus on scalability and advanced customization. Motive, on the other hand, positions itself as a privacy-minded, conversational AI solution. It emphasizes AI-powered insights, conversational AI analytics, and the Motive Playboard for visual control, suggesting a focus on user experience and data-driven merchandising. The core difference lies in their AI application and priorities. Klevu highlights AI learning and personalized recommendations, indicating a focus on optimizing the search experience based on shopper behavior. Motive centers on 'Questions AI,' conversational analytics, and a focus on privacy using the Empathy AI cloud. This divergence indicates that Motive targets merchants who prioritize user trust, detailed AI insights, and a more conversational shopping journey. Klevu caters to larger merchants with established merchandising teams that need robust tools to manage complex catalogs and campaigns, particularly those already using Shopify Markets.

Our Verdict
If you are a larger merchant with a dedicated merchandising team and are looking for a robust, scalable solution with advanced filtering and Shopify Markets compatibility, Klevu is likely the better choice. Their platform offers comprehensive tools for managing campaigns and leveraging AI for personalized recommendations.
For merchants who prioritize user privacy, conversational AI experiences, and gaining unique AI-powered insights into their shop's performance, Motive is the more compelling option. Its focus on 'Questions AI' and a visually-driven 'Playboard' offer a differentiated approach to on-site search and discovery. Merchants seeking to build trust with their customers through transparent data practices will likely find Motive a better fit, especially if they are drawn to a more conversational and interactive user experience. The lower number of reviews for Motive might indicate it's a newer app, so keep that in mind.
Common Questions
Which app is better for a merchant already using Shopify Markets?
Klevu explicitly states compatibility with Shopify Markets, making it the preferred choice for merchants already utilizing that feature.
Does either app offer advanced reporting capabilities?
Klevu mentions improved AOV, implying reporting on sales metrics. Motive emphasizes 'Conversational AI analytics,' suggesting in-depth data insights, particularly related to search queries and user interactions.
Which app provides more control over product display?
Motive's 'Motive Playboard' appears to offer more direct visual control over product display and ordering, while Klevu focuses on filtering and campaign scheduling.
Is either app specifically designed for mobile users?
Motive highlights 'Conversational AI analytics so you can chat directly with your shop' which could indicate a mobile-first approach since chats are most often done on mobile. Klevu does not mention mobile specifically, but it is fair to assume it works as intended on mobile since it's a search solution.
Which app has a higher risk, given their rating/reviews?
While Motive has a perfect rating, the lower number of reviews (7 vs. Klevu's 13) *could* indicate higher risk, as the app's performance hasn't been as extensively validated by the broader Shopify merchant community. The ratings are so close together that the review count might be the better indication of risk.
