Product Samples by Luke vs The Watchlyst ‑ Price Alertsfor Shopify (2026)
Product Samples by Luke and The Watchlyst ‑ Price Alerts, while sharing the Shopify category 'Pricing', address fundamentally different aspects of e-commerce. Product Samples aims to increase sales and reduce returns by allowing customers to sample products before committing to a full purchase. It positions itself as a tool for enhancing customer satisfaction and ensuring product suitability, making it ideal for merchants selling items where trial or quality assurance is critical. The Watchlyst, on the other hand, focuses on capturing potential sales that are lost due to pricing. It allows customers to set price alerts, enabling merchants to re-engage these customers when prices drop. The primary difference lies in their proactive vs. reactive approach. Product Samples is proactive, offering samples upfront to influence purchase decisions. Watchlyst is reactive, addressing customer price sensitivity by recapturing lost sales opportunities. One focuses on product experience and reducing risk for the buyer, the other on price negotiation and conversion optimization. The low review count for Watchlyst, despite its good rating, suggests it may be a newer or less widely adopted app compared to Product Samples, which boasts significantly more reviews. While both impact revenue, they do so through distinct mechanisms: Product Samples by increasing basket size and reducing returns; Watchlyst by rescuing sales from price-conscious customers.

Our Verdict
For merchants selling products where sampling is essential (e.g., cosmetics, perfumes, food items), Product Samples by Luke is the clear choice. Its higher review count and focus on product experience make it a valuable tool for increasing sales and reducing returns in these product categories. The Watchlyst ‑ Price Alerts is better suited for stores with frequent price fluctuations or that cater to price-sensitive customers. If a significant portion of your traffic abandons carts due to price concerns, Watchlyst can help recapture those lost sales.
While both apps can contribute to revenue growth, their approaches are different. A merchant might even consider using both if their product catalog contains both high-touch items benefiting from samples and price-sensitive goods. However, if budget is a constraint, choose the app that best aligns with the specific reasons for customer abandonment and your product characteristics.
Common Questions
Which app is easier to set up and use?
Based on descriptions, Watchlyst emphasizes 'setup in minutes' and full automation, suggesting potentially higher ease of use. Product Samples' ease of use is less explicitly stated but likely depends on how the sampling process is integrated into the existing store setup.
Which app is better for reducing returns?
Product Samples by Luke directly addresses reducing returns by allowing customers to try products before committing to a full purchase. Watchlyst does not directly impact return rates.
Which app is more effective for increasing average order value?
Product Samples aims to increase average order value by convincing customers to buy full-sized products after trying samples. Watchlyst focuses on converting abandoned carts and doesn't inherently increase order value beyond the initially intended purchase.
What types of stores are most suitable for Product Samples by Luke?
Stores selling products where customers benefit from trying before buying, such as cosmetics, perfumes, tea, coffee, or fabric samples. Any product where touch, taste, smell or material matter greatly.

Stores with fluctuating prices due to sales, promotions, or inventory management. Also stores that sell products where price comparison is common (e.g. electronics, clothing).
