Shopify Search & Discovery vs Year Make Model ‑ EasySearchfor Shopify (2026)
Shopify Search & Discovery and Year Make Model ‑ EasySearch are both Shopify apps designed to improve the search and discovery experience for customers. However, they cater to fundamentally different needs. Shopify Search & Discovery is a general-purpose app aimed at enhancing overall store navigation, product findability, and recommendation strategies for any type of product. It leverages features like customizable filters, synonym groups, and product boosts to improve search relevance and increase average order value. Year Make Model ‑ EasySearch, on the other hand, is a highly specialized app tailored for stores selling products where compatibility with specific models (vehicles, devices, etc.) is paramount. Its core function is to enable customers to find products that fit their particular 'Year, Make, and Model' combination using dedicated widgets and tables. The primary distinction lies in their focus. Shopify Search & Discovery emphasizes broad search improvement and personalized recommendations applicable to any product catalog. It aims to improve product discovery through customizable filters, synonyms, and product boosting. Year Make Model ‑ EasySearch is deeply focused on the fitment aspect of product searching, specifically enabling customers to find compatible items for their specific vehicle or device configuration. The "My Garage" feature in EasySearch enhances the user experience by saving customer vehicle selections across sessions, adding further convenience for repeat purchases.

Our Verdict
For merchants running general eCommerce stores selling various product types without specific fitment requirements, Shopify Search & Discovery is the clear choice, primarily due to its free availability and broad feature set focused on general search enhancement and product recommendations. It offers a solid foundation for improving product discoverability and increasing average order value. However, if a merchant specializes in auto parts, electronics requiring specific model compatibility, or any product line where 'Year, Make, Model' fitment is critical, Year Make Model ‑ EasySearch is the far superior option. Its specialized features, such as the YMM search widget and fitment tables, directly address the specific needs of this niche and can significantly reduce returns and improve customer satisfaction by ensuring accurate product fitment. The higher rating also indicates a better user experience among its target demographic.
Common Questions
What happens if I sell both general products and auto parts?
You may need both apps or a more comprehensive solution. Shopify Search & Discovery can improve general product discovery, while Year Make Model ‑ EasySearch handles the fitment-specific needs of your auto parts section. Consider if a single app offers integrated YMM functionality alongside general search improvements.
How difficult is it to set up the Year Make Model database in EasySearch?
The app description mentions a preloaded database for automotive parts, but adding your own is possible. The difficulty depends on the size and format of your existing YMM data and your familiarity with database management. You might require developer assistance for complex datasets.
Can I use Shopify Search & Discovery to create a 'parts finder' like in EasySearch?
No, Shopify Search & Discovery's filtering capabilities are not designed for the complex, multi-faceted search logic required for a Year Make Model parts finder. It lacks the specific data structures and search algorithms needed for this type of application.
Does Shopify Search & Discovery offer a 'My Garage' feature?
No, Shopify Search & Discovery does not include a 'My Garage' feature or equivalent. This feature is unique to Year Make Model ‑ EasySearch and provides added convenience for returning customers who need to repeatedly search for compatible parts.
Is Year Make Model ‑ EasySearch more expensive than Shopify Search & Discovery?
Based on the information provided, Shopify Search & Discovery is free, while Year Make Model ‑ EasySearch is likely a paid app (though the exact pricing is not specified). The specialized functionality and database requirements of EasySearch typically justify a higher price point.
